Upcycle from waste

This module makes learners aware of the concept of Upcycling. There are many designers around the world who creatively convert unused and non-valued discarded materials to create functional/aesthetic products.
Through this pathfinder, Learners will explore different avenues of product design and make functional products out of usable waste/junk.

Learning objectives:

   • Concept of Waste and Waste Management
   • Recycling and Upcycling
   • Concept of Carbon Footprint and non-biodegradable waste
   • Social dependencies on commercial products

Program Activities

  • Introduction to Waste and Waste Management
  • Awareness of reduce-reuse-recycle and inclusion of Up-Cycling as a concept
  • Materials – handling different materials and how they interact
  • Products of use – looking at every-day products and innovation through a creator’s perspective
  • Decoupage Techniques – Assimilation of usable waste from homes/school/community to create art.
  • Product ideation and planning
  • Business of upcycling – Value Addition
  • Optional – Sessions with social workers and social entrepreneurs working in the ‘rags to riches’ segment
